A River of Beer at Tahquamenon Falls

WE ARRIVED TO THE FALLS on a brisk late-autumn morning. We had spent the night before anxious that we might get snowed in indefinitely, as the first snow of the season was quickly becoming a winter storm. We made it none the less, and spent a good half hour just watching and listening to the falls. They’re hypnotic, mesmerizing. The tannins from the cedar swamps upstream give the water a signature brown color, earning the nickname “Root Beer Falls” from locals. The Tahquamenon Falls Brewery is just around the corner from the park entrance, and after a day of watching what looks like a 48ft waterfall of beer, their Wolverine Wheat was the perfect way to end our visit.
